Djurgården - the sustainable town

Planning has commenced in Linköping for a new development area - Djurgården. Planning will focus on ecological, social and economic sustainability. In this new area between 3000 and 5000 new residences will be built together with 200 000 – 300 000 square meters for offices and businesses and approximately 30 000 square meters of commercial premises.
Djurgården is situated on the outskirts of the Tinnerö Oakland in the southern part of Linköping. From the year 1606 and for a hundred years on, the premises where an enclosed area for royal deer hunting, created by the Duke of Östergötland, Johan, who was the son of king Johan the third and Gunilla Bielke. During the 18th and 19th centuries the area was at the disposal the county governor, as part of the salary for this position. During this period Djurgården was a popular recreation area for the inhabitants of Linköping. From the early 20th century until the garrison was terminated in 1996 Djurgården was used as a military exercise field.

A completely new part of Linköping!
Djurgården in Linköping is a completely new development in the town, an unwritten page but eventually the location of 3 000 – 5 000 new residences (6 000 – 8 000 inhabitants) and 200 000 – 300 000 square meters office and business space.
An area to be built for the future
The City of Linköping welcomes ideas for the project which can be prototypes for long-term sustainable town planning with regards to social, ecological and economic aspects.
An area adjacent to two university campuses
Djurgården is close to the University of Linköping, with Campus Valla to the west and the University hospital campus (Health University) to the north.
Good communications
Rapid public transport, so called LinkLink, will pass through the area, commencing on 15th June 2008. The service will be buses at ten minute intervals to begin with, but these will later be replaced by trams.
Nature and recreation
Djurgården borders on the Tinnerö Oakland - a nature reserve of national importance and of great value to the people of Linköping for recreation and outdoor life.
Central location
Djurgården has a relatively central location in Linköping, only 2,5 kilometers from the town square in the city centre.
Close to major work-places
Djurgården is close to several major workplaces in the town, for example the university hospital, Mjärdevi Science Park, Linköping's University and Garnisonen.
Strong trademark
The projects which will be implemented in the new development area Djurgården will contribute in strengthening Linköpings trademark and the trademark of those development companies which will be operating in the area.
Djurgården in Linköping will be an internationally well-known development project in the field of community planning.
